Here’s an interesting thought: is your fibre internet connection “slow”?  Or, to put it more simply: is your internet slow, in general? If you suspect that it is slow then there a number of factors that need to be determined:
    • What speed are you paying for? This could be anywhere from 100Mb to 950Mb (usually referred to as Fibre Max)
    • For the purpose of this example, we are only focusing on the download speed
    • if you are connected to Wi-Fi, your download speeds will be less. A lot of standard Wi-Fi provided in your fibre router is substandard. Check out our page on improving Wi-Fi.
  • To get an effective speed test, make sure you are connected with a network patch cable directly to the router
  • We recommend the Chorus speed test tool, it can be found here
  • Take a note of the speed and time, and run a few tests hours apart
The main problem is that most internet providers – especially the big telcos, often “manage the traffic on your behalf” Plain English translation – they will throttle (limit) your connection speed if they have lots of customers on the internet. Think of it like a toll road. There are rush hours, sure. But its like having a variable speed limit, that is enforced by the owners of the road, whenever it suits them! Which slows you down when you are choosing to use their road! We had a customer with a big telco. He was paying for “Fibre Max”. His connection speed was very low, as low as 15Mb, which is internet speeds from 20 years ago! Taking readings over the course of a day yielded speeds of 50Mb, 125Mb, 25Mb, 200Mb was the fastest. The solution: we moved his fibre to us – we don’t throttle your connection speed. He now averages 800Mb and over, and is very happy getting the service he is paying for.
